What Exactly Is A Pell Grant?

July 25, 2008 By: admin Category: Education Financial Aid

A Pell Grant is a certain type of federal financial aid that you can use to help you pay for your education. It will also help you cover the expenses that go along with school such as books and supplies. The great thing about a Pell Grant is that you do not have to repay this type of financial aid.

What are the qualifications for a Pell grant?

In order to get a Pell Grant, there are certain qualifications that you must meet. First, you must demonstrate a financial need and in order to do this you need to fill out the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Second, you must be a United States citizen, an eligible non- citizen, or a U.S. national and possess a valid social security number.

You need to have a high school diploma, possess a GED or pass an ability to benefit test. You will need to be enrolled in a qualified post-secondary school and be working on teaching credentials or a first undergraduate degree. You have to maintain a certain grade point average and prove that the funds will only go to your education. If you are a male between the ages of 18 and 25 then you must register with the Selective Service.

What are the amounts that are awarded?

While there are no limits to the amount of Pell Grants that you can have at one time, there are limits as to how much money you can get with each Pell Grant. Typically Pell Grants can range from $400 to $4,050 in an academic year.

What is the application process?

You can go directly to the website for FAFSA or pick up an application from your college of choice. Submit the application as a whole, with all of the necessary documents to go with it. Once you are approved, the funds will be available for your first semester. If there are any errors in your application or they require further documentation to process your application, then they will send a follow up letter requesting the necessary documentation. You need to comply with it as soon as possible so you will not hold up the funds when it comes time to start school.

What make this program different from the rest?

Many types of financial aide for students such as college financing generally require repayment of the funds at some point in time. Sometimes you need to make payments as you go, where other loans do not require payments to start until 6 weeks after graduation. The Pell Grant as well as scholarships, gives you the funds free and clear, with no need to repay the loan. This is a plus and makes this one of the most sought after loans amongst students.
