What Are You Allergic To?

August 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Allergy Treatment

Some of the common things that people are allergic to are:

Food

Insect bites/stings

Medication

Airborne particles

Chemicals

Food

Food allergies are more common in babies and young children and may disappear as the child gets older. The reaction to certain foods can vary with some being mild and more chronic symptoms and other being fast and severe symptoms.

Often the allergic reaction to a food allergy is a rash, stuffy nose or diarrhoea. The most common foods that cause allergic reactions are dairy products, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts and seafood. Peanut and seafood allergies can be quite severe.

Insect Bites/Stings

Many people have allergic reactions to the poison that is injected with an insect bite or sting. Minor reactions are usually some redness and swelling around the bite area. Some reactions can be sever however and can cause an anaphylactic reaction in those who are severely allergic to stings. Call an ambulance immediately in case of anaphylactic reaction.

Medication

It is fairly common for people to have an allergic reaction to some medications with the most common medication causing allergic reaction being antibiotics. With allergic reaction to medications you can also have minor reactions such as rash, but can also have severe reactions. It is important when starting any new medications to watch out for allergic reactions. It is also important if you know you have a medication allergy to notify your doctor or any doctor that may be treating you.

Airborne Particles

Environmental allergens are one of the most common allergens and they may include dust mites, mould sports, animal dander and pollen. The pollen allergies are usually seasonal but the others are year round allergies. Allergy symptoms to airborne particles are usually runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, blocked sinuses and sore throat.

Chemicals

Some people may be allergic to certain chemicals that are in cosmetics and laundry detergents. The reaction to these allergens is usually a rash, hives or eczema. Household cleaners and pesticides may also cause an allergic reaction in some people.

If you have an allergy to any substance the best thing for you to do is to avoid the substance. Many substances can be quite difficult to avoid but you will need to do the best you can.

Allergies such as severe reaction to bee stings may require you to carry with you an antidote to take if you do get stung.

For dust mite allergies you will need to clean frequently and vacuum beds often.

You may be able to build up immunity to some allergens, but you will need to visit an allergy specialist to help you with this.

Basically though, if you suffer from allergy symptoms the first thing you need to do is to identify the source of your allergy and then take the steps to dealing with it. Scientists are making new discoveries all the time and hopefully one day soon they will have much better treatments for allergies and you never know, maybe they will be able to eliminate them altogether one day.
