Identity theft can potentially strike anyone and spare no one. Identity thieves are abundant these days, waiting for the slightest chance to steal your personal details so such theft.

Everyone who conducts business, whether online or off line should learn how to avoid becoming a victim. A good way to start is to follow these identity theft protection tip listed below:

1. First and foremost - Never give out personal information over the phone, the internet or email. No matter how legitimate sounding or looking those thieves are unless you are 100% certain that they are legitimate you should divulge any personal information.

2. Second tip is to check all your bills carefully and regularly as soon as they arrive. If you make this practice a habit you can easily spot unusual charges to your bills and be able to take appropriate action immediately.

3. The third way is to avoid using birthdays and other common dates as your password for online transactions or PIN number for ATM transactions. As much as possible code your passwords and PINs creatively. Commit your unique password and PIN to memory or write them somewhere safe away from your statements and cards.

4. If you are heavy on debts and credits, make sure to study annual credit reports and scrutinize each entry in the reports. Identify unusual charges and transactions and report it to proper authorities as soon as possible. Even if you are not in much debt it is worth checking your credit report on an annual basis.

5. Lastly, to shield yourself from identity thieves, never give out your social security number. SSN are the most widely attacked and abused personal information that triggers identity theft. Be cautious when giving out this information to anyone and make sure that it is really necessary for the business transaction at hand.

One extra tip - when conducting electronic business transactions over the internet, you may want to take advantage of the various online identity theft shield services that are offered by a number of companies. These shields offer a high degree of protection and are usually reasonable priced.

Each identity theft protection tip above may not guarantee that you will not fall victim to this crime but together they will go a long way towards preventing identity theft from happening.
