October 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Identity Theft Protection

Are you worried about identity theft protection? In the last decade, identity theft has become a rampant crime. Millions of people have been affected by it and the estimated worldwide damage caused by it is a staggering $221 billion.

It is no wonder that identity theft protection and identity theft prevention is an issue of growing concern for many. One of the main reasons for the explosion in the number of identity theft cases is the proliferation of e-commerce. Now days, people do a major portion of their shopping online, usually via credit card.

In fact, statistics say that in 2004, $6.8 Trillion changed hands on the internet alone! Today, even if a fraction of these customers have their identities stolen, it translates into millions for criminals and huge losses for the victims. Thus identity theft protection is a must-know for all who partake in any sort of dealing online. After all, knowledge is power. And you can use this knowledge to empower yourself against online identity theft.

Here are a few identity theft protection tips to help you out:

1. Make your online purchases only from sites that provide secure payment facilities. Such websites have software that encrypts your personal information so that only the vendor can have access to it.

2. If you have an account with online markets such as Amazon.com or E-bay, it is pertinent to change your passwords regularly. The same should also be done if you maintain an online bank account.

3. Another identity theft protection tip would be to treat all e-mails claiming to be from you bank, credit card company, etc. with suspicion. Often, criminals send out such bulk e-mails and in most cases, they ask for your personal info.

4. An important practice would be to have an up-to-date security software on your PC at all times. Make sure your firewall is in place and keep an eye-out for any spyware. Spyware can reveal your secret information such as name, address, credit card number, etc.

5. In the event that you do get a seemingly genuine e-mail from your bank, talk your bank over the phone before you reply to the e-mail. If you take that tiny bit of time on a local call, you will have saved yourself a whole lot of trouble.

As you can see, there are many different ways to toward your goal of identity theft protection. If you just take the time to use just one of these tips, you will become less vulnerable to identity theft
