The Funny Side Of Aircraft Lighting

July 05, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation

Ever stop and think of all the lights in an aircraft and the ridiculous names we have given these lights.

For example the anti-collision light. Anti is a word that means stop, so a stop collision light. Now you can pull the wool over my eyes some of the time but I know that little light isnt going to stop that 737 on my rear from sucking me up like an oyster appetizer. A better name might be a collision avoidance light or a hey, Im over here light.

Strobes make sense but then some rock and roll burn out probably came up with that name.

Navigation lights, who comes up with this? If navigation worked then why is there thousands of dollars worth of N-A-V-I-G-A-T-I-O-N equipment in the cockpit?

I love post lights too. Why not call them streetlights for the gnat that is ostensibly trying to enter my nostrils?

Overhead light are overhead but an eyeball light doesnt see a thing. There are landing and taxi lights- Hey, Taxi!. NVG lights and just in case we may have left something out of the Christmas tree lets throw in some auxiliary lights and thank goodness caution and warning lights do what they say they do.

In all seriousness trying to understand aircraft lighting and electrical systems in general can be a bit confusing so where is one to go to get this all sorted out? Books are a great source but if the internet is more your speed go get illuminated at http://www.gyroplanepassion .com/AircraftElectricalLighting.html or just stay in the dark.
