If You Suffer From These Symptoms After Touching Latex, You Probably Have A Latex Allergy!
A latex allergy is quite a strange allergy to have, and its one that we do not often hear much about. Latex is a rubbery substance that medical gloves used to be made out of, people who have this type of allergy must avoid latex products at all costs. In the past latex allergies were a big problem for health professional because once in a while either a patient or a health care worker would have an allergic reaction after being touched by or wearing latex gloves. In this article we take a closer look at latex as an allergen.
When a person who has this allergy comes into contact with latex they will start to show symptoms, these can either be mild or severe, an example of mild symptoms are things like hives, and itchy skin. If an individual suffers from severe symptoms then they may develop breathing difficulties, anaphylaxis and this may lead to death.
Reactions that occur as a result of a latex allergy may develop fast as in almost instantly, but they can also occur up to 24 hours after contact. When a reaction happens straight away it is more likely to be fatal. The process of these types of reactions begins with the individual breaking out in hives, the throat then becomes tightened and breathing problems then occur. This can progress to anaphylaxis and then death. These immediate reactions tend to happen to people who are especially sensitive to latex and they can occur even if they come into contact with another substance that has previously been in contact with latex.
When a reaction develops over a period of time it tends to be harmless, at most it causes discomfort because it makes the skin swell up and itch. This reaction is usually due to the chemicals that are used to make latex rather, than latex itself.
If you suffer from a latex allergy you will want to avoid the following foods: Banana, kiwi, melons, avocado and chestnuts. People who are allergic to latex tend to be allergic to these foods as well, so it is advisable that they are not consumed.
The best form of treatment for this type of allergy is to stay away from latex. The problem is there are so many products that contain latex, these include condoms and gloves, so you will have to scrutinize the label of every product that may potentially have latex in it. Fortunately in the western world most products clearly state what materials are used to make them on the label so this makes avoiding them a bit easier.
If you have suffered from a minor allergic reaction to latex you are strongly advised to seek medical advice for proper diagnosis. If your allergic reaction is a severe one you will need to be rushed to a hospital as soon as possible. A severe allergic reaction can be fatal but if medical attention is sought in time there is a higher chance of survival.
