Each year over nine million Americans have their identities stolen. Someone you know may have been a victim of identity theft. Recently, there was a story in a nationally syndicated magazine that told the frightening story of how one woman almost lost her four children because of identity theft.

The drivers license was stolen of a twenty eight year old woman who was a full-time Mom and engineering student. Another woman used her drivers license when giving birth at a local hospital. The woman abandoned the baby just a few hours after birth. Investigators contacted the twenty eight year old woman and threatened to take away her children for a crime that she did not even commit.

There are many different forms that the crime of Identity theft may take. Identity thieves that obtain your personal information may use the information to rent an apartment, establish a telephone account in your name or to obtain a credit card. You may not even realize that you are a victim of identity theft until you receive a call from a debt collector.

Many victims of identity theft spend thousand of dollars trying to repair the damage that has been done to their name and credit report. Some victims of identity theft have been denied job opportunities or denied for a car loan or rejected on a credit card application. Identity theft is a serious crime that can affect your life for years afterwards. Make sure to protect your personal information from identity thieves.
