Identity Theft Tips - Vacation Time, Home Security & Identity Theft

June 02, 2008 By: admin Category: Identity Theft Protection

No matter what time of year it is, its vacation time for someone somewhere. And just about nothing is more distressful than returning home from a fun vacation to find that your home was robbed while you were away. Not only can precious items be lost, pieces of information could be taken or copied and your precious identity could be stolen, as well, in identity theft.

Take precautions with these tips:

1) Pick up some timers so that it will look like someone is home while you are away. You can get radio timers and light timers, for inside and out.

2) Hire someone to mow or otherwise care for your lawn and surrounding yard before you leave town. High grass sends signals that you are away. And newspapers, mailbox stuffers and door flyers littering your property also send the same signals.

3) Hire a house sitter and have them stop by your house and check on things a few times a day. They can turn off and on different lights, so that same ones arent on every evening. They can care for your pets and plants. They can pick up mail and bring it inside, get rid of flyers on doors, around mailboxes and trashing the yard, etc.

4) Alert a trusted neighbor and the local police that you will be gone. And ask them to keep an eye on things, too. Leave a spare key with your trusted neighbor if possible.

5) Stop mail at the post office so that it doesnt collect in the box haphazardly.

Short check list for house sitters and watchers:

Make sure nothing is out of place, nothing out of the ordinary is going on upon entering. If you spot something amiss (window broken, furniture askew, etc.) call police at once.
Upon first visit, make sure stove and range top is off (burners off), no irons are plugged in, etc.
Check to make sure lights are turned on for the evening.
Turn on a television in the home and / or radio.
Take care of any pets: food, water, exercise (walk dog), clean up messes).

So take steps to minimize your risk. Keep your home and your identity safe with the tips above. Find even more by seeking out and reading other articles to help you and your family protect themselves.
