Identity Theft Problem? Resolve It!
It is a real possibility for an identity thief to create debt using your identity. It is also a possibility for an identity thief to have access to your financial accounts and run off with your hard earned money. Once an identity thief steals and assumes your identity, it is almost a certainty that your credit record is blemished. You will probably be blacklisted by several unsuspecting merchants.
Legal consequences may be pending, which you are not aware of. When you have been alerted to the fact that an identity thief has damaged your reputation and your financial and credit history, you are basically left to pick up the pieces and prove your innocence. You are left with having to deal with all the personal, financial and legal consequences that the identity theft has left behind.
Resolutions may be easy. It is possible that your banks and credit card companies will conclude that you are a victim of identity theft and that any transactions that have been incurred were fraudulent by nature. However, be prepared because this can be a long and tedious process, and you may need to act swiftly in contacting your banks and credit card companies as soon as you discover that your identity has been stolen.
Once this is done, they are likely to restore the accounts and take legal measures in dealing with the fraudulent issues. It is possible from this point on that you may not hear another word regarding the matter.
However, if the situation becomes more difficult, involving numerous organizations and taking great lengths to resolve the problems created by the identity thief, you may need to initiate further action to protect yourself and your reputation. You need to track your transactions by checking your credit file with a credit reporting agency. Advise the credit reporting agency that your identity has been stolen so they can issue out an identity fraud alert to help get the situation under control.
Next, you need to go over transactions in a step by step manner and dispute any unauthorized occurrences. Try to get them cancelled or reversed. It can be unnerving when you are trying to dispute that the signatures in place are not your own.
Doing an online search of your name may help locate incidences where your name has been abused. Patience and persistence are the keys when dealing with establishments and companies. If the identity theft involves huge amounts of purchases, keep in mind that in this regard, you are not the only one who has been victimized. Merchants and people who have provided the goods or services to the identity thief are also victims.
In this situation, they are placed in a difficult position when they are trying to ascertain if you are who say you are. It is understandable for you as a victim to become upset, angry or even enraged about what has happened to you, but keep in mind that your best chance of getting things straightened out is to be calm, honest and factual.
It is crucial that you keep highly defined detailed records of everything regarding the identity theft. Documenting everything will give you substantial backing in case things become even more difficult later and you are forced to hire a lawyer or official investigators. You may wish to obtain advice from an identity theft lawyer regardless. With the hiring of a lawyer comes the security that you are now under legal protection.
A lawyer can help you in obtaining all the evidence and then presenting it to law officials. Larger cases may be presented to the USA Federal Trade Commission and involve several other agencies.
