Food allergies are very common in young children, however they tend to grow out of them. It is estimated that less than 1% of adults actually suffer from real food allergies.

So what is the definition of a food allergy? To answer this question we have to look at why they occur in the first place. During a food allergy the immune system is reacting to the food that you consumed. For some reason the immune system sees the food as a dangerous foreign body and as a result it releases histamines and antibodies to attack the apparent danger. The symptoms of the allergy are caused by the release of the histamines and antibodies. As you can see a food allergy must involve the immune system, food intolerance and food poisoning are not food allergies as they do not occur in the same way.

The symptoms of this type of allergy can range from mild to severe to life threatening. The initial symptoms tend to be swelling and itching on the tongue, in the mouth and in the throat, common symptoms also include swelling, itchy skin, eczema, flushing of the skin, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen lips, red and itchy eyes, coughing and running nose amongst others. An allergic reaction can occur within minutes of consuming food that you are allergic to, however in some cases it may take several hours before it develops.

Anaphylaxis is a rare but potentially life threatening food allergy symptom. During this reaction symptoms of the allergy appear over the body of the sufferer, causing them to lose consciousness, as well as lowering the blood pressure.

If you suffer from food allergy symptoms, you are highly advised to visit your doctor, in order to reduce your chances of suffering from anymore allergic reactions. Your doctor will diagnose what your allergy by using one of three common methods, these are elimination diets, skin prick tests and blood tests.\r An elimination diet involves the doctor trying to find your allergy by process of elimination, he or she will cut suspect allergy foods from your diet, and if your symptoms go away it is highly likely that you are allergic to that food.

The skin prick test is probably the least reliable method of food allergy diagnosis out of all of them, it involves a small sample of the suspected allergy food on a patch of skin, a scratch is then made, if swelling occurs around the scratch it is supposed to mean that you are allergic to that food. However this test throws up a lot of false positives.

During a blood test a sample of blood is tested for food specific IgE, which is a chemical that occurs in the blood when an allergic reaction takes place.
