Common Myths about Hypnosis
Hypnosis is probably the oldest method of seeing what's inside in case of human mind. It is known at least from 4,000BC. At that time Hypnosis was commonly used in ancient temples. However, the golden age of hypnosis began much later, between 17th and 18th century, at the time when Benjamin Franklin was interested in animal magnetism
Hypnosis is not another New Age thingie though it has started to being used more commonly in the recent years. Today there are several top universities that offer hypnosis courses to doctors, social workers and psychologists in order to help them in their work. Hypnosis is considered more and more useful and fascinating as well as more and more needed to do various jobs.
What's not very surprising, because of the religious origins of hypnosis there are lots of myths about it createcd by religious officials and atheists alike.
For example most of people still think that there is only a single form of hypnosis. This is not correct as there are several completely techniques used. The method used in hypnosis depends on what your aims and personal preferences of you and your hypnotist.
Another potentially dangerous myth about hypnosis is that every hypnotist is alike the other and once you've been to one, you've seen them all. While the methods they use is often very similar, all hypnotists and hypnotherapists have their own unique style the way psychologists and dentists have their own methods and preferences. The length of the session, number of sessions, your reaction at the end etc. - all of them depends on the hypnotherapist.
One of the most interesting myths of hypnosis is that when you are being hypnotized, you cease to percieve the world around you and have no free will. While it works just fine in the old horror movies, nothing could be further from the truth. When you are hypnotized, you find yourself in a state of focus and concentration. You actually gain both free will and a lot of self-control. This myth, however, is so strong that there are lots of people who are frightened by hypnosis out of fear of being controlled by a hypnotist.
The last major myth that is associated with hypnosis is it is possible to hypnotize someone with his or her consent. The hypnosis works only if you are willing to accept suggestions from your hypnotist. There is no such thing as a mysterious hypnotic spell (think how the elections would look like if it was possible to hypnotize people!) All you do is allowing your mind to receive hypnotist's suggestions nothing more. And that's all.
