What Would Happen If Today Was The Day That Changed Your Life?

August 20, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

Recently I printed an article in our newsletter that was written by a great Australian motivational speaker named Craig Harper (www.craigharper.com) and it started me thinking. What indeed if today was the day?

What if today was the day when your life changed for the better?

If you look back, I\’ll bet my last dollar that you all can remember one day that completely changed your path forever. That one day when your world tilted and it caused you to walk in a new direction.

I can remember mine.

It was 1979 and I was 18 years old. I had just graduated from high school and decided to take a year off before I went to college. My dark and dysfunctional childhood had turned me into an angry teenager with no direction. I was tired of being the family ping pong ball, and I wanted to get away from everyone.

So that summer, my father sent me away to a teen outward bound program. Mostly to get me out of the hot city, but I think he hoped that it might give me a new perspective on life. Since I had nothing better to do, I agreed and spent the next 3 months in the woods hiking up mountains, canoeing down rivers and generally learning how to survive in nature.

In the middle of the program, we were all required to spend three days alone in the woods. I was given a tent, a very small bag of granola and was placed next to a stream. They checked on me a few times a day, but never spoke. Just walked by and waived.

Now something strange happens to you when you are all alone in the woods … you start to think.

The first thing I did was to hang my food up on a tree so the animals wouldn\’t get to it.

Then I made sure that my tent was up correctly as I didn\’t want to get wet if it rained, which of course it did later that night.

Then, with nothing left to do, I started to think. I reached for the notebook and pen that I was allowed to bring with me and I began to write.

My brain took me back and I examined everything that had happened to me. The memories made me happy, sad, cheerful and angry. Back and forth it went as the memories flowed through my mind.

Eventually, the garbage that I had been telling myself (and others) for years and years began to sound really stupid. It\’s hard to lie to yourself when you are alone with only your thoughts to keep you company.

By the end of the second day, I was finally able to see what I had become, and I didn\’t like her at all. She was a spoiled and angry brat who was given a hard start in life certainly, but had a lot going for her in spite of it. I remember sitting under a tree and crying for what seemed like hours. Then once I stopped feeling sorry for myself, I became angry. I stomped around the woods for a while throwing sticks and rocks and yelled at the air around me.

A few hours later, totally exhausted from the emotion of it all, I found myself on a large boulder by the stream where I had pitched my tent. I can remember watching the sun set behind the mountain I was next to. I then stared at the fish in the stream and poked at the water with a stick to pass the time. My mind was numb by now and I felt empty. I had no where to go, no one to talk to, and no destination in mind.

It was just about then that it happened. I\’m 46 now and I can still remember the exact moment when my entire world changed.

As I looked into the stream, a slow anger started to boil underneath my skin. It was as if something in my brain snapped. I remember thinking about what I was going to do after this solo in the woods and I decided to show everyone how wrong they were about me. A fierce determination overtook me and I remember thinking that I would show them all. I was going to become a lighthouse. My family was an example of how to do it wrong. I decided right then and there that I would be an example of how to do it right.

Once the solo was over, I began helping out everywhere I could. I helped build the fires, I carried as much in my pack as I could and I helped cook every meal. The counselors were stunned and all asked me what brought on the change. They told me that in the years they had been leading kids in the woods, no one had changed as much as I did. I just shrugged and told them that I had simply decided to grow up.

My new path had started.

Unfortunately it took another 15 years before I was finally able to become the teacher that I dreamed about on that rock so long ago. Why? Mostly because I was young and had a lot to learn, but I\’ll never forget the moment when it all started. I\’ll never forget that sunset and the way the light played with the water in the stream.

As Oprah would say, it was my \”ah ha\” moment.

How about you? Can you remember the day that changed your life?

What if today was another one?

What if today you decided to be a lighthouse to the world and change your life?

Why can\’t we just decide to make today the day? The day when our world changed into a positive, abundant, loving world? The day when we started to do what we actually wanted to do? The day that we started to live our destiny?

I think today is a good day to start. A great day to change your world. In fact, let\’s start with something simple. How about this … the next time you are in line at a drive through, like Starbucks for example, why not pay for the car behind you? Or how about leaving a bigger tip at the next restaurant? Let\’s say an extra $20 dollars or so?

Pass it forward.

Treat people like you want to be treated.

Be a lighthouse and change the world by being an example.

Show everyone how to do it right.

Make today the day that changed your life.

Until next time,

Katharine

212 Degrees

August 20, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

At 211 degrees, water is pretty darn hot.

But at 212, it\’s boiling, and making steam.

Only one degree, but there is quite a difference. While hot water is a nice thing when you are taking a shower, boiling water has a lot more potential. You can use it to cook, or to run a steam engine.

I bet you are wondering what my point is. The point is, one degree made that difference. One, just one.

Take a look at your life right now. No matter where you are, or how happy you are with it, there is always room for that extra degree. The one that takes your from hot to steaming!!

Take a look at the results that you are getting out of life. Sit down and really think about it. What ways can you add that extra degree, and \”Kick it up a notch\” as Emerill would say?

You could:

* Spend 10 minutes each day focused on one thing - anything you want it to be. In a fifteen years, you\’ll be a bonafide expert!

* Spend the last hour before bed planning the next day. You\’ll wake up with confidence and a game plan, important ingredients for a great day!

* Read one book each month that is aimed towards improving some skill or talent.

* Spend one hour each week studying up on your career field or industry.

* Enroll in a free online or live course. These can be found using Google, at local schools, libraries, etc. Not only will you improve yourself, you\’ll also be able to meet other likeminded people to share your passion with!!

There are so many little things that you can do to improve your skills, and therefore improve your self. There are many things in life that we waste time on, professional and personal development are NOT some of them. Take some time to nurture your talents and your techniques.

Before you know it, you\’ll be boiling!!!

P.S. It has come to my attention that the article referenced here was inspired by a gentleman named J. L. Parker. The concept was introduced to me back in October of 2001 when I was working with a company called CedarLast Home Improvements. I was the telemarketing director and he was always passing along motivational ideas and tid-bits. This was one of them. At the time, I didn\’t know who was responsible for this great tip, but now, since I do, I\’d like to offer additional credit to the author and inspiration behind it, S.L. Parker, of the 212 Club (www.212club.com).

Getting What You Really Want

August 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

Everyone wants something in life, love, money, success, recognition … Yet too many people fail to realize their desires, and nearly all of them for the same reason. They seem to go whichever way the wheel turns, as if they have no control over their situation. If their vehicle takes them to places they never intended to be, or crashes into the brickwall of utter despair, that\’s just the cruelty of fate.

\r\n

Don\’t get me wrong, I realize that truly horrible things do happen to folks, and through no fault of their own. Gigantic obstacles are placed in our way sometimes, that seem absolutely insurmountable. Generally speaking, however, getting what you really want out of life is a matter of three (possibly four) simple steps.

\r\n

Firstly - and this may seem like a no-brainer - you have to decide what it is you want the most. Decide what to aim for, with some specificity. Don\’t make a laundry list of wishes, but focus on one thing at a time. If you\’re not sure about where you want to go, there\’s no point in getting into the vehicle in the first place.

\r\n

Secondly, create an action plan. This will be your map for getting from point A, where you are now, to point B, where you want to go. You know what you want, what steps are you going to take to get it?

\r\n

Some things are obvious. If you want a better job, start with skills assessment and maybe some additional training. Then you\’ll need to sell yourself and your skills either to your present employer for a promotion into the new position you want, or to a new employer.

\r\n

Other goals will require a bit more thought. Some will really leave you stuck without a clue of how to get there. Not to worry, though, no matter where it is you want to go, someone, somewhere has probably already been there. So what did they do to get there, what road did they take? Books, biographies and such, can be a real help with this. So hit the library if you\’re in need of guidelines.

\r\n

Get ideas, get advice, create a good map for yourself, and know where you\’re going. Write it down, and make sure you can read it every day.

\r\n

The third and final step is execution. Do what you planned. Take the steps you outlined on your road map and be persistent. If you run into naysayers, simply ignore them. Everyone who ever did anything great always ran into naysayers.

\r\n

Never take your eyes off the goal. Keep pushing. Whatever you do, do not give up until you have what you desire in your hands. Never, ever give into the notion that you \’can\’t get there from here.\’

\r\n

Decide - Plan - Execute. It is really that simple.

\r\n

About that fourth step. Sometimes your action plans may not get you to where you want to be. Maybe something is missing, maybe some step is not quite right. If you find this is the case, after exercising your full patience and persistence, you simply must rework your plan.

\r\n

Look at it, figure out what\’s missing, and get back at it. It\’s just like following a map through a place you\’ve never been before. If you find taking a particular road takes you to the wrong town, rather than turning around and going home, giving up, you take a second look at your map, figure out where you made the wrong turn, and get back on the road.

\r\n

Whatever you do — Keep your hands on the wheel!

Help for Procrastination

August 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

We try to get help when we are screwed up. Getting the needed help requires taking responsibility on your situation whether its to quit smoking, loose some weight, find a job, control bad breath or even stop Procrastination! The sources of getting reliable help often elude many and make the task difficult. If you have found this article, then you are more than half the journey to find help for procrastination.

Procrastination can take any form, it depends on individuals, but an overriding description would be to put forth of forward in favor of tomorrow i.e. to voluntarily delay an intended course of action despite the grave consequences. Everyone has done some form of Procrastination in their lifetime. But not everyone indulge in this self-defeating attitude. Highly successful individuals have learnt to control their tendency to Procrastination. These are tips that will help you find Procrastination an outdated term:

  • Do unpleasant task first and forget about them.
  • If a task seems mighty or not inviting, the truth is that youve got to do them and avert some problems in the future break them down into small steps and tackle them bit by bit.
  • Get a deadline for all your projects. Make them realistic so you do not get frustrated when you cannot meet too ambitious goals. There is a kind of urgency attached with a task when a deadline is added.
  • Delegate tasks if you have to. Nobody told you that the most successful individuals did it all by themselves.
  • Disregard protocols sometimes, you just have to get started on something you can start anyhow so you gather enough momentum to continue, when you feel motivated, you can follow orders.
  • Change your perception, change our attitude! Because you can easily lie to your subconscious and can deceive it, you become your own worst enemy. Whatever you tell your subconscious is what it acts. You can tell a wrong perception about a task to your subconscious and it will say yes boss, thats exactly what it is. So why not tell it some good, change your attitude and your thinking about that task tell it to your subconscious and watch it say yes boss, thats what it is and we can do it now!
  • Now, consider the effects of putting off a task, of not being responsible, of not being in total control, of not making that call, of not checking on the dentist or the doctor, of not trying to loose some weight, quit smoking, being the market leader, being the best you can be.

If you are a perfectionist like I used to be, you\’d have to understand that first, human nature is imperfect. I actually put off starting a web business two years ago because I wanted to get it right the first time. Now all around the web, I see my ideas littering without a dent of perfection. There are hundreds, thousands and even millions of excuses you may give to procrastinate on whatever task you have to do, well its definitely to your personal detriment, excuses will always be there. Get started now! And save your future, your spouse, your children, your job, your health, your life!

Thats it on Help for Procrastination, for more on a complete idiot guide to overcoming procrastination, see http://www.procrastinationstop.blogspot.com .

The Important Role Qualities Can Play in Your Life

August 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

He sat in my office week after week describing a life that was clearly not working. First there was a brief affair with his wife\’s sister. Then there was the on-again off-again reconciliation with his wife, generally off because he wouldn\’t follow through on agreements. Next would come the fear that he would have to file bankruptcy because of overspending, often on items he didn\’t need. His weight and blood pressure were too high. And on and on and on the litany continued.

The family history was horrendous, with a father on welfare who sexually abused five out of the seven children (both girls and boys, though my client wasn\’t one of them) and a mother who admitted to setting one of their rented houses on fire. And that was only one of four times a house in which they lived burned to the ground!

Trained as a systems therapist, I knew his background played a significant role in who he was and why his life didn\’t work. Consequently, I used genograms and an explanation of dysfunctional family patterns in addition to pulling out all the tricks of the trade to help him revisit, re-experience, and reframe his childhood so he could \”heal the inner child of his past.\”

Then one day, as we were talking about his latest attempt to circumvent his landlord\’s attempt to collect the rent money so he could purchase some new stereo equipment, he came to the realization that he didn\’t know how to tell the truth. \”Fabricating my way through life is my modus operandi,\” he acknowledged with a grin.

But it was a look that said he wished he didn\’t have to live that way.

That\’s how we came to discuss what it means to have integrity, to adhere to an ethical code, to face each day with honor and truth in all he did. Taking a page from family systems, it was easy for him to see that he didn\’t have a chance to learn about integrity in the circumstances under which he grew up. After all, he had a father who didn\’t maintain boundaries with his children, which is certainly the consequence of not having integrity, and a mother who burned down at least one house, which demonstrates a total lack of integrity in maintaining the agreement she had to keep the rental property in reasonable shape.

He became intrigued with this quality, since he\’d always been puzzled by how others seemed to get along just fine with telling the truth all the time. \”Well,\” I said, \”It\’s like this. Telling the truth makes life a lot simpler. And since your life is certainly so complicated it doesn\’t work the way you want, you might consider giving integrity a try. You\’ve already taken the first step by acknowledging that you aren\’t truthful. The next step is discovering if you are willing to practice honesty at every opportunity.

The look on his face was a marvelous mixture of emotions. While there was relief that perhaps he didn\’t have to continue replaying his early life, there was also hope that if this approach worked, he might actually resolve many of the problems he experienced week after week. Yet overlaid on these reactions was the question of how to practice something he knew little about.

My advice to him, as it usually is in such cases, is to begin with a phrase that would reinforce his intention to change, while at the same time acknowledging that he didn\’t yet know how to practice the quality that had been missing in his life. Therefore, I suggested he begin by saying, \”While I haven\’t known how to have integrity until now, from this point onward I will practice integrity at every opportunity.\” And practice he did. The very next week he came in to report that he got a call from a collection agency about unpaid back bills for his pickup truck. Rather than lie and say he sent it two weeks earlier and that they must have lost the check (a statement they might have actually believed because he was quite good at fabricating the truth, having practiced the skill for a long time), he admitted that he hadn\’t paid the bills and would be sending a payment that day. Then he actually put the check in the mail.

The consequence of taking this new approach, he said, was that he didn\’t need to remember to whom he told what, a problem that can get pretty sticky if one chooses to lie all the time.

Therapy didn\’t continue for long after that time because his life began to turn around. There were times, of course, when out of habit he would be halfway through a lie and he\’d have to find a way out of the maze he was creating by not having integrity. But all in all, he did a very good job in a reasonably short period of time because he was committed to adding this important quality to his life.

When he came in periodically for a \”check-up\” session, we sometimes talked about other qualities he might need, but for him the primary one that was most needed had been integrity.

Ever since that time I\’ve stressed the need for clients to develop the qualities of the human spirit that are missing in their lives. This doesn\’t mean we shouldn\’t acknowledge the impact that early experience can have in shaping who we are. It is simply that I\’ve found a focus on qualities to be as effective as many other techniques in effecting change, not only for others but for myself as well.

Five Simple Motivation Strategies That Work

August 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

Every one of us has the potential to successfully move through the unique problems that face us. Yet, creating success often involves first identifying the many ways in which we continue to think negatively and the many ways we limit ourselves. The next step becomes replacing ineffective strategies with newer, more empowered self-leadership strategies. Below are five tips to help you weed out negative habits and replace them with positive, supportive behaviors.

Create Harmony
\r Instead of prodding, poking, and forcing yourself to make changes, create harmony with the changes you want to make. Envision the life you would like to live and form a rich and rewarding relationship with that life. Build a bridge of loving respect between you and your desire. See your dream as a living, delicate entity needing your kind attention so that is can grow and take shape. All it takes is your heart and motivation to take pride in what you are creating. You have choice to struggle and be angry about creating change in your life, or you could take a breath and make a new agreement within yourself. Decide to create a phenomenal connection between you and your dream.

Acknowledge Your Worth
\r Motivating yourself by with criticism, negative self-talk, or name-calling decreases your overall level of motivation. Instead of being relentlessly nasty with yourself, create a warm and accepting atmosphere to promote persistent effort and a favorable attitude toward change. Positive self-talk - talking to your self in a confident, reassuring, positive, and friendly way - is the best way to gain energy and motivation.

If you have gotten into the rut of negative self-talk, now is the time to develop a new habit of being fair and compassionate to yourself. You are far more likely to succeed in your goals when you acknowledge your strengths, assets, and ability to persevere. Being your own worst enemy will not automatically vanish one day. Believing in yourself and learning to be your own advocate takes time, persistence, and dedication. Spend at least five minutes each day listing (in writing and in verbal speech) truths about yourself and your abilities. Get out your pad of paper, look yourself in the eye in the mirror, and write or speak motivational statements such as these:

  • I don\’t know exactly what to do, but I can choose to do something.
  • If I really put my mind to something, I can do it.
  • I have done it before, and I can do it now.
  • When something goes wrong, I can handle it.
  • I can deal with this.
  • Other people have learned how to accomplish this, and I can, too!
  • Minimize Anxiety
\r Because learning new habits requires changes in your beliefs and behaviors, it can produce a mild level of anxiety. This anxiety can provide energy for motivation and perseverance. However, if your anxiety escalates, you may find the energy of your stress to be incapacitating. Minimize your levels of stress by being compassionate to yourself. Understand that some stress is normal as you make changes, but you don\’t have to make it worse by criticizing yourself. Learn to breathe, take time out and assess your situation, and relax before taking your next step.

    See Your Best Case Scenario
\r The worst will not always occur. Recognize catastrophe thinking. Here is a wonderful piece of advice I saw on a greeting card from the good people at Hallmark: \”If I had to give up one sense, it would be my sense of impending doom.\” Stop scaring yourself into believing that every negative thing that happens is a horrific disaster. Yes, negative situations can occur, but focus on problem solving and moving forward despite the presence of fear.

    Make a Choice
\r When you use the words \”should\” and \”try\” you make yourself a victim to your own change. Instead, drop the words \”should\” and \”try\” and use empowering statements such as:

  • I choose to . . .
  • I now have . . .
  • I am able to . . .
  • It is my wish and choice to . . .
  • I am willing to . . .
  • I am now already . . .
  • Setbacks are Temporary
\r Learn to see that your setbacks, failures, and relapses are temporary. Failure is not all bad. Actually, it is probably the only way to become successful. The obstacles, setbacks, and stumbling blocks are an anticipated aspect of any journey. Failure is really just feedback telling you to adjust your plan or to try a new approach. One of the most important things about failure is deciding to look at what happened, modify your plan or goal, and then move on to your next action step.

When you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts or acting in ways that decrease your motivation, take a deep breath, relax, and begin again. There is no need to be perfect or think positively all the time. The point is to notice when you engage is self-limiting behavior and then challenge yourself. You could ask, \”Are the things I am thinking or saying to myself true?\” \”Are my actions bringing me more energy and determination?\” Then use the tips above to replace your limiting thoughts and behaviors with statements and actions designed to make you feel better about yourself and life.

Your Future, Today - Empower Yourself With Thoughts

August 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

When it comes to building your own character, self-confidence and inner strength, remember one thing - our thoughts define who we are and what we become.

Imagine a drop of dew on a leave in the morning. By itself, it would be gone before the noon day sun reaches it\’s zenith. But a single drop of water, combined with millions more in a downpour that last for a few days can create a flood to wash away cars, bridges, dams, houses or even entire towns. So is the power of thought. A single empowering thought, left to grow on it\’s own, combined with other positive thoughts and action over days, weeks and then years become your character, and the foundation of your destiny. If the water is to be pure and useful, it must be purified. So it is with our thoughts. Even good thoughts can get contaminated by our own negative perception of life or the negative opinions of others. Our thoughts must be constantly purified in the recesses of our minds together with lots of right actions.

If you say to yourself \”I am stupid and ugly and I\’ll never amount to anything\”, your subconscious mind will absorb the message over time. Left to fester, you will eventually feel the way you think about yourself. Then, the best advice is to say goodbye to stereotyped negative attitudes.

There is a wise old saying that the wise man is happy for what he has, while the fool complains of what he has lost. When we get old, it is no use fretting over things we no longer have- for example your youth, health, or beauty. Instead, we should try to be happy with what we have, wisdom, calmness, experience and composure. We can share these gifts to young people who are just starting out on the journey of life.

When we are old, obviously some parts of our machinery don\’t work as well as they use to. For instance, our hearing, eyesight, our walking pace, the things that we can remember or the groceries that we can carry from the car. But instead of brooding about the bad things that might happen, you can do something about your health. If your memory does not work as well, you can learn memory training. Proper memory techniques are not only useful in old age, they are invaluable for young students to learn new study skills or working adults to cope with information overload and accelerate learning. Being old does not necessarily mean being ill or bed-ridden. Regular exercise, a healthy diet low in fats and sodium and a network of social contacts all ensure that in old age, we will be able to look back on the past happily and joyfully anticipate what the future holds for us.

You are never too young to start exercising your memory, adopting a positive attitude, embracing a healthy lifestyle of physical exercises and healthy food. Start today to avoid being a cynical, forgetful, hunch-backed, bed-ridden old fool. Just like a drop of water that becomes a trickle, a stream, a river and then a lake or ocean - you can start today with having more positive thoughts and one exercise that you can do for life, like walking or jogging. You will find that when you reach retirement age, you\’re younger, happier, healthier, wiser, sharper than your contemporaries. Self-empowerment, like a journey of a thousand miles, start with a single step. Start empowering yourself today and reap the benefits in the future.

Dealing With The Frustration Of Daily Life

August 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

It happens to all of us - in fact, it might just be happening to you right now…

How do we avoid the frustrations that come with daily life? In other words, how do we keep on keeping on when the going gets tough?

Well, obviously attitude has a strong bearing on how youll react to certain things. But lets be honest sometimes it feels as if the world is against you like you cant do ANYTHING right.

How do we position ourselves to fight the good fight?

For myself, I always like to remember a quote that I heard one time:

Most people are only one failure away from success

Another thing I like to do is give myself some breathing room. You see, most of the time, we heap so many things onto ourselves that nothing ever seems to get done.

In saying that, here is a small list of things to help you beat the frustrations of life:

    • Stop multitasking - When things get hectic, just focus on knocking out one thing at a time. Prioritize your most important things and get those done first.
    • \r

    • Take action - One of the worst things that we can do is to sit around and sulk about how bad things are going. Do something productive and progressive. It makes a huge deal.
    • \r

    • Take some me time - Many times we feel like we are getting stretched in 10000 different directions. Make sure you are taking care of yourself. (including getting your sleep and exercise)

Just remember, these setbacks are only temporary. Keep pushing and youll eventually break through.

Just dont quit before you give yourself a chance.

Don\’t Let Someone Else\’s Opinion Become Your Reality

August 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

I really hate labels. The kind that says someone can\’t do or be something because they are too \”young, old, dumb, smart, educated, uneducated, ugly, beautiful, rich, poor, liberal, conservative, introverted, outgoing, young, old, fat or thin.\” The list is endless. Any of those things may be true about a person but just because they\’re true, that doesn\’t mean that\’s all there is to the person or that they\’re limited because of that truth. Other damaging labels are from those that tell a person what they \”should\” do or be.

A great example of this is motivational speaker and author Les Brown who, along with his twin brother, was born on the floor of an abandoned building in Liberty City, a low-income section of Miami, Florida. Three weeks later, their birth mother gave the baby boys away and at six weeks of age, they were adopted by Mamie Brown, a 38-year-old unmarried, uneducated cafeteria cook and domestic. Brown says that her importance to his life was immeasurable. \”Everything I am and everything I have I owe to my mother. Her strength and character are my greatest inspiration, always have been and always will be.\”

In high school Brown \”used to fantasize being onstage speaking to thousands of people\” and wrote \”I am the world\’s greatest orator\” on pieces of paper. But it wasn\’t until he met LeRoy Washington, a speech and drama instructor, that he learned that \”there comes a time when you have to drop your burdens in order to fight for yourself and your dreams.\” It was in Washington\’s class that Brown learned how to use power of speech to motivate and stir people\’s emotions. He also learned to never believe the limitations someone else placed on him.

As a child, a teacher had mislabeled Brown as a slow learner and educably mentally retarded because of his inattention to his school work and his restless energy. He continued to believe that label, suffering with the resulting low self-esteem, until one day in class when he told Washington he couldn\’t perform a task because of it. Washington responded with, \”Do Not Ever Say That Again! Someone\’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.\” This truth opened his eyes and his mind to the possibilities and dreams he had for his life and he set about making them come true. \”The limitations you have, and the negative things that you internalize are given to you by the world,\” Brown says. \”The things that empower you - the possibilities - come from within.\”

Although Brown didn\’t continue his formal education beyond high school, he believes in the unending self-education that he\’s pursued with dogged persistence and determination. As a teenager, he kept after a radio station manager until he got a job doing janitorial work. One day he had the opportunity to fill in for an absent disk jockey and did so well he was given a part-time job as a DJ. Eventually, he became a full-time DJ, then station manager. He went from \”community activist to community leader; from political commentator to three-term legislator; and from a banquet and nightclub emcee to premier keynote speaker.\”

Like Les Brown, great achievers and record-breakers in all walks of life have accomplished what they have because they weren\’t limited by labels someone else put on them. They haven\’t let someone else\’s opinion become their reality, instead believing in their own possibilities within. Just like they haven\’t let someone else decide what those dreams and possibilities are.

    Our Life - Our Choice

August 17, 2008 By: admin Category: Motivation Techniques Comments Off

OK, maybe thats a bit of an overgeneralization but it applies most of the time. Basically, what I am saying is that we are what we are because thats what weve decided to be. We live where we live, do what we do and think what we think because thats weve decided to do. Yes, I understand that there are some illnesses and other stuff that happens that tends to force us into a particular mode of operation. But by the same token, how we function within our situation and how we deal with the things we need to deal with is always our decision.

This takes us right back to one of my foundation principles - we believe what we believe because of our personal programming. Our present perception (whatever it is) of what is written in the preceding paragraph is absolutely correct based on our life experiences, input and programming. Does that mean that there are no incorrect opinions and this is one of those Im OK, youre OK so lets hold hands and sing something things? Oh, heck no! This just means that we all have our personal reasons for doing what we do and thinking what we think.

Unfortunately, none of us repeat, none of us has been fortunate enough to get one hundred percent accurate and unbiased information and input into our little pea brains as weve trudged through life. As a result, were all playing our life game with a few cards missing from our deck. Its almost a sure bet that well never find all of em, but I think the sporty thing to do is to do our best to search out at least a couple more cards before we revert back to our basic earth elements. And yeah, well count the Jokers as worth keeping. (Maybe theyre really the ones we oughtta look for first! Just a thought.) Note: For those of you who are presently holding a partial deck that is only giving you a Jack high poker hand- heck, thats good enough to open. Hang in there and keep playing!

Now that weve come out of the closet and admitted that were all screwed up to some extent, lets get back to the initial subject. Our life and nearly all of its components is the result of our decisions that have been heavily influenced (or even controlled) by our programming. And yeah, we may have also been heavily influenced by other factors namely people but unless someone is holding a gun to our heads to force us to do what were doing, the reason were here at this point in our lives is because of the decisions weve made. Even with a gun aimed at our noggins, we still have a couple of options to choose from, dont we?

For those of us who are completely satisfied with the way our lives are going in every little detail we should take a lot of satisfaction in knowing that we have been extremely fortunate to have been able to make some very beneficial decisions. Back up a second here. The biggie word in the last sentence was satisfied. I didnt say happy. We can be generally happy with the way things are going in our lives and still not be satisfied. The way I look at it, if we have just one small thing wed like to do differently or better then were not completely satisfied. Cool! That keeps us from joining the walking dead and trudging down our rut to the slime pit.

For those of us who are not completely satisfied with every little detail in our lives, we really should seriously consider doing something about it! And that brings me to the main point of this little discussion. To be able to do something about our lives, to make the changes and improvements that we feel we would like to make, we need to first say the following words:

I (insert your name here) hereby take full responsibility for all aspects of my life. I am personally fully accountable for who I am, what I believe and what I have accomplished - and will accomplish in my life.

Of course, you can expand that if you want to include never blaming anyone else for your situation, to understand and respect the rights of others to have any darned opinion they want because now you know why they think and believe the way they do, to not take stuff so seriously because everyone is doing whatever they think is the best thing to do at the time, that were all a little goofy and that helps make this world a really interesting place to live and that youre going to do your best to take some time for yourself every day to think about cool stuff and just relax and that youre going to chill out and have some fun and enjoy life more. (Whew, I need to take a deep breath!)

Once we can accept full responsibility for our lives and what we are, only then are we capable of moving on toward our goals and a truly enjoyable lifestyle. Well worth doing, Id say.
