Within the United Kingdom, identity fraud has become one of\r highest rating crimes to date. The UK government estimates \r that each year identity fraud costs them 1.3 Billion. \r Identity fraud has worked because many companies and people\r in general have been convinced in some way to hand over \r their items, documents or money. Identity fraud can remain \r undetected for several months before anyone realizes what \r has been done.

The UK has come up with an idea that is due in the year \r 2007. They intend to issue Identification cards that \r contain information biometrically about the individual. \r This information could come in the form of fingerprints or \r an iris scan. Many people do not believe this will solve \r the problem. No matter what the government does to protect \r your identity, one thing will always remain the same. The \r protection of your identity is largely your concern.

There are a few things that you can do in efforts to \r prevent identity theft. This of course, is no guarantee, \r but it is a great step in protecting yourself from thieves \r and fraud.

When you are cleaning out your desk, do not simply throw \r your personal items away. Items such as bank statements, \r credit card statements, receipts and utility bills should \r be destroyed. You could burn these items or obtain a \r shredder. A shredder can do multiple things; it can destroy\r your personal documents as well as compact discs or floppy \r disks that could contain identifying information. \r Additionally, some shredders will shred a credit card as \r well.

Protect your credit cards just as you would your cash. \r When you receive a new credit card, it should be signed by \r you immediately. If you must destroy a credit card, you \r should shred it by either using a shredder or cutting it \r up thoroughly with scissors. If your credit card should \r become stolen or lost, report it to the credit card \r companies instantly, this will prevent the card from being \r used. Another thing many people do not consider, is when \r you are dining out, be watchful of letting your card out \r of sight. One popular fraud is to simply take an imprint \r or write down the numbers for use later.

Lastly, when you receive your credit card or bank \r statements open and review them immediately. If you see \r anything out of the ordinary upon the statements, you \r should call the company right away and begin a \r investigation into it. Additionally, if you should ever \r notice your statement has not arrived on time, you should \r make a telephone call to the company to investigate this. \r It is possible that is has been routed to an address other \r than your own.

Another way to safeguard your identity is not to use common numbers as ATM passwords. Why this is an important issue?

Identity Theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in our society. This group of crimes often starts with someone using personal information they have found on an unprotected computer.

When a file is deleted via the keyboard or the recycle bin all that really happens in the attribute that call for the file is changed so the file is not called. The entire file remains on your hard drive until it is overwritten by other data. Hard drives today hold huge amounts of data; it could literally be years before a particular file is overwritten. Until that file, which could contain sensitive or confidential material is overwritten, it can be found and resurrected quite easily, and doing so does not require a lot of technical knowledge.

Anyone who accesses your computer could access those deleted files, finding such things as passwords, credit card numbers, photos, records of websites visited and any other data you thought was deleted. Armed with this information they could compromise your identity quite easily, and you may not find out until it has cost you thousands. Recovering your identity and correcting the damage can take years.

A recent study of just over 100 discarded hard drives, some of which had been reformatted, found more than 5000 credit card numbers. Insuring that you delete hard drive files securely is a big part of protecting yourself from Identity Theft.

What can we do to protect against someone finding our deleted data?

There are programs available that have been dubbed shredder or evidence eraser programs. They use special algorithms to find all instances or mentions of the files you want deleted, remove them and then overwrite the deleted hard drive files with random data. Many of these programs are used by government agencies to insure that data is really deleted.

You can defend against Identity Theft; however it does take vigilance and the discipline to protect your personal data. You need to be on guard against all of the email scams, phone scans, and you need be sure that when you delete hard drive files, they stay deleted.

Your defense against Identity Theft arsenal must include strong passwords, mechanical and software firewalls, a spyware, virus, adware, email scanner, suite that is updated regularly. Make and keep frequent automatic backups of crucial files, and use of a shredder or erasing program.

You may also subscribe to one of the many identity theft notification services that are available, however keep in mind that they are sometimes only called into action after someone finds and tries to use your personal information.

The very idea of identity theft is somewhat new. The phenomenon has grown out of the digitalization of our society. We want convenience and we want it now! How many of us barely carry any cash now because of our ATM debit cards? How many of us pay some or all of our bills online? The numbers are staggering.

With this convenience comes some risk. Those of a criminal nature have taken note of the possible value of using someone elses identity. In a plastic world, one can use an identity for just about anything. Just as importantly to the criminal mind, people are more than willing to pay for a new identity as well.

So, what are the nuts and bolts of identity theft? At its core, identity theft occurs when someone gains access to your critical personal information. The information they need includes your legal name, current or recent address and social security number. If they can get other numbers such as your credit card or bank account numbers, all the better.

Once they have this information, there are a couple profitable directions they can go. They can order things online and keep them. They can run off a credit card [it is easy] and then spend their way across the country or locally. Alternatively, they can buy expensive products from local stores and then return them for the cash.

As you have probably noticed, illegal immigration is a hot button topic these days. Well, identity theft criminals are getting in on the act. Illegal immigrants need social security numbers to get a job in many areas. Guess who can give them the numbers in exchange for certain cash payments?

So, just how does a criminal go about committing widespread identity theft? They must be pretty smart, right? Some definitely are. In situations like the nightmare at the Monster job site, sophisticated worms and email techniques are used to trick people into coughing up their information.

More often than not, identity theft is made possible by a blunder. CALPERS, the state employee pension fund for California, is a classic example. The fund went to send out brochures to retirees notifying them of board elections and who was running. Oh, one problem. They printed the name, address and SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS on 445,000 brochures!

At the end of the day, convenience comes with a price. In our new virtual world, identity theft is it. We are at risk for complex schemes and human error. We just have to get used to it.

One of the fastest growing high-tech crimes in the world today is identity theft. I this high-tech world, there are people who will try to hack computer systems and get your information so that for a limited time, they can become you. Since they are now you if they are successful, they open new credit card accounts in your name, charge them to the hilt, then seemingly disappear from the face of the planet. Meanwhile, the credit card companies come back to the REAL you to find out when you are going to start making payments on that leather furniture, that top-of-the-line computer system, and that 60 inch plasma TV.

It is not a pretty picture. Now keep in mind that the majority of online sites where you can purchase items and merchandise are not scams and they take every possible precaution to ensure that this does not happen to you. While identity theft is something to be very aware of, it should also not throw you into such a state of paranoia that you disallow any members of your family from purchasing anything online! And also worthy of noting are two things:

1. There are relatively simple steps you can take to prevent identity theft from happening to you.

2. Identity theft is NOT limited to just online transactions!

Effective identity theft protection is now a necessary part of doing business online of offline. Whether youre online, on the phone or taking part in a business deal in a face-to-face arena, there are certain tips that youll need to remember in order to participate in a solid identity theft prevention plan. If youve ever used a credit card to order take-out food over the phone, youre potentially leaving yourself wide open to identity theft.

One of the things you can do to help protect you against identity theft is to put passwords on your credit card, bank, and phone accounts. Call your phone company today and put a password on your account. You should also ask your phone company to put what is known as a PIC Freeze on your phone account. This means that they will require your express permission before they switch your long distance carrier to anything other than what it is right now. There is usually no charge for this service from your phone company.

Another thing you should do frequently, at least a few times a year is to review your credit report as frequently as possible. Get a copy of your credit report from each of the Big Three credit reporting bureaus and go over them with a fine tooth comb.

Another reason for reviewing your credit report is because the majority of consumers credit reports contain one or more errors, and if you dont report the error, it will never be corrected. While that is entirely separate discussion, you should review the more detailed information about this at Credit Report Help Center.

Whenever possible, use an actual credit card instead of an ATM debit of check card. It is much easier to NOT be assessed for fraudulent charges on a real credit card, whereas many people have reported difficulty in not being required to pay charges, even fraudulent charges, when using a debit card.

Always, always, always take the receipt at a restaurant when you pay for dinner with a credit card. Some people go to the extent of also writing down the servers name on the credit card receipt, and then compare it against the amount shown on their credit card statement. This is a small step but could save you big time, as well as enabling authorities to catch a thief with the name of the server who last had possession of your credit card and was out of your sight for a period of time.

You know that junk mail you get almost every day? Much of it has your name and address, but sometimes it also contains very private information such as your date of birth and even your social security number. Dont just throw that in the trash can invest in an inexpensive shredder at an office supply store like Best Buy or Office Depot, and shred that junk mail. Many occurrences of identity theft have come as a result of thieves going through someones trash and discovering such information in the trash, with more than enough data readily visible to create a temporary new you.

Do not become too relaxed about identity theft in this electronic age. Take some simple and logical steps to protect your information to avoid becoming the next victim.
