What Causes the Common Cold? Myths, Facts and Theories

August 20, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

A virus causes the common cold. This is a fact, but why some people develop symptoms and others do not is unknown. There are only theories. No one knows why the common cold duration is longer in some people than in others. Again, there are theories, but no one really knows.

Although a virus that causes the common cold cannot reproduce outside of the human body, it can live on the skin and other surfaces for as long as three hours. These viruses become airborne when an infected person sneezes and to a lesser extent when he or she coughs. The next person becomes infected when he or she inhales the airborne secretions or touches the face after touching an infected person or a surface that they touched. Common cold duration can be as short as two days or as long as two weeks.

Researchers have made some attempts to understand the differences in common cold duration among otherwise healthy people, but there is still no clear understanding of why this occurs. The average adult has two to four colds per year, but some people have less and others have more, according to information provided by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. School age children may have as many as 12 colds per year and their caregivers typically have more colds than their fair share. Asthma sufferers have more colds than the average person and in these people the virus often leads to hospitalization by aggravating their chronic condition. A recent study showed that those people who have asthma produce fewer anti-viral proteins than the average person, possibly indicating that immune system function is a factor.

It is believed that close contact among school age children causes the common cold spread and frequency among them. Some emphasis has been placed on educating children about the importance of hand washing and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 22 million school days are lost annually to common cold. A recent study in Turkey indicates that zinc supplementation can reduce common cold duration in children and is safe and well tolerated. The results of this double blind placebo-controlled study showed that those children who received the zinc supplements as a treatment missed a little less time at school than those who received the placebo and that when used as a preventative children developed a significantly lower number of colds.

Unlike the zinc nasal sprays that can cause a permanent loss of the sense of smell in some people, zinc supplements appear to be safe. Zinc is an essential mineral for proper immune system function and overall good health. The average diet may not provide adequate amounts of zinc, thus daily supplementation is a good idea.

Myths about what causes the common cold include getting overheated or chilled. Researchers have studied the affects of cold weather on common cold duration and frequency. Those people who live in colder climates do not appear to have more than the average number of colds per year, nor does common cold duration appear to be longer.

If weather plays a role, it is believed that spending more time inside, where you can be exposed to more people who are infected (such as a school), is more relevant than the outdoor temperature. Studies of a virus that causes the common cold have shown that the virus is more active in lower humidity. But whether the weather is hot and humid or cold and dry, studies indicate that if a person is exposed to a virus that causes the common cold, he/she will become infected 95% of the time and develop symptoms 75% of the time.

Methods of Treating Acid Reflux

August 20, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

Acid reflux is a quite common illness that causes the gastric acids and sometimes the food inside the stomach to get into the esophagus because the valve that separates the two organs is not functioning properly. The acids inside the stomach are very strong, as strong as the acids from a car battery, so if they get into the esophagus they can seriously damage it. The stomach is protected against the acids inside it but the esophagus is not.

Many people are diagnosed with acid reflux yearly, and they can choose from many types of treatments, depending on their diet and lifestyle.

The simplest treatment method is a slight change in the lifestyle and eating habits. The first thing that you should do is to always have the last meal of the day a few hours before going to bed. It\’s more likely that acid reflux occurs while you are lying down because it\’s easier for the stomach\’s contents to reflux due to the position of the body. You can also prevent reflux by elevating the side of the bed on which your head lies. This should be done by all people that suffer from acid reflux.

A change in the diet is also recommended, because there are certain types of food that can encourage acid reflux. Among these there is chewing gum, chocolate and fatty foods. \r Tobacco smoke can irritate the esophagus\’s walls and increase the damage that the acid does so smoking should be ceased.

There also are many medications that can help treat acid reflux, like antiacids and special drugs that can prevent reflux and reduce the quantity of acid inside the stomach.

The last resort is the illness advanced too much or if it anything else fails is surgery. The doctors tighten the valve between the stomach and the esophagus in order to prevent reflux. Surgery is very efficient and many of the patients operated are completely cured after it is done. Sometimes you must take the prescribed drugs after the surgical intervention too.Acid reflux surgery is not done too often, only in severe cases or if the patient requires it.

Try to treat your acid reflux soon, before the heartburn and other symptoms become really annoying. The sooner you start the treatment, the easier it will be to cure the illness.

Indigestion Tips: Natural Cures for Acid Reflux

August 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

Recently, more and more people are considering natural medicines to cure different types of maladies. Many of those people, who turned to alternative medicines, which more often than not means herbal treatments, maintain that their symptoms were cured.

Whether or not these herbal treatments are effective, most people using them are certain that unlike the man-made medicines manufactured by big pharmaceutical corporations, herbal treatments have little to no side effects. As natural treatments continue to become popular, people having digestive problems are now frequenting establishments selling natural cures for acid reflux.

Due to the various side effects prescription drugs and even over the counter can inflict, many people who have acid reflux have stopped taking these drugs. According to studies, some antacids can interfere with calcium and vitamin absorption in the body. In some instances, antacids affect digestive behavior by shutting down stomach secretions consequently easing pain for the time being but not really curing the problem.

People also have various reactions to drugs. Certain medications will alleviate heartburn in some people but may not have the same effect on others, forcing people to sample several brands of antacids and further exposing them to perils. These problems related to antacids often force sufferers to find alternatives through natural cures for acid reflux where in most cases, a single type of tea or capsule claims to solve many types of health problems. The rationale being, the smaller the number of medications a person takes in one day, the lesser the chance of exposing oneself to toxins.

One of the most widely accepted and convincing arguments why people ought to shift to natural medicines to cure their acid reflux is that antacid products use things like aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate, aluminum phosphate, or a combination of these substances to neutralize stomach acid.

Biologically, these types of substances have systemic inhibiting effects on functions of the human body. For example hydrochloric acid, which is connected with food digestion and absorption of essential nutrients and vitamins, may no longer be able to perform its vital functions. Another truth about hydrochloric acid in the human body is that our bodies have natural coping mechanisms to sustain themselves.

When hydrochloric acid is neutralized, the stomach triggers an automatic response mechanism, producing even more acid to compensate for what have been lost. Rather than curing the problem, we create another problem. Acid rebound is typical when the stomach produces more acids to replenish what have been neutralized.

People see a way out of the trap in natural cures for acid reflux, even though they are often not backed with official scientific explanations. The typical positive points of herbal medicines are that these products work by boosting the bodys immune system, allowing it to heal itself naturally. For those supporting herbal treatments, acid reflux is often linked to poor digestion. Isolating and empowering the digestive system can then naturally prevent acid reflux.

Herbal treatment appears usually in the form of tea, juice, capsules and food supplements. Most of these herbal medicines can be taken anytime without any worry of overdosage or side effects.

Choosing an Acid Reflux Medication That Works

August 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

If you suffer from acid reflux disease finding the treatment that controls your symptoms is very important. Fortunately there are a good variety of options available to those who suffer with this condition including medications that help control and prevent even the worst symptoms. The severity and how often the symptoms occur will play a role in which type of medications will work best and the best place to start finding relief is a visit to your doctor.

The first thing your doctor will recommend for relief is making some dietary and other lifestyle changes. Eating a healthy diet and avoiding foods that are known to exacerbate the symptoms of acid reflux are all part of this change, as well as stopping smoking, not drinking alcohol, and reducing stress. This strategy works for many people but for those who continue to suffer symptoms the next step up the treatment ladder are acid reflux medications.

Relieving the heartburn, pain, discomfort, and bitter taste of GERD is one of the purposes of taking this type of medication. The second reason is to prevent any further damage to the esophagus, larynx, and throat while giving these organs a chance to heal.

There are four classes of acid reflux medication on the market today. Which ones you use will depend on the severity of your condition and how well you respond to other forms of treatment.

Antacids have been used for many years to neutralize stomach acids for those who suffer heartburn and upset stomachs from time to time. They include such well know products as Rolaids, Tums, and Mylanta which all work by neutralizing gastric acids on contact. While they can be effective for mild acid reflux symptoms in people who have infrequent attacks and they work quickly their effectiveness is limited and does not last for very long.

Pepcid, Tagamet, and Zantac are what are known as H2 blockers which help reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. They were once available by prescription only but can now be bought over-the-counter at any pharmacy. These types of acid reflux medications can be a good choice for chronic sufferers with mild to medium symptoms.

Proton Pump Inhibitors include such medications as Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix, Nexium, and Aciphex. These are more powerful GERD medications that can only be obtained with a prescription from a doctor. They work by stopping the release of excessive amounts of digestive acids from the stomach and intestine and are used to help those who suffer the most severe symptoms of acid reflux disease. They can also be used to treat esophagitis and stomach ulcers.

Promotility agents can be used by acid reflux sufferers but because they can have bad side effects their use is limited. They work by increasing the speed with which food leaves the stomach, which in turn keeps excessive acid secretion at bay. Reglan and Maxolon are the more well known names for these types of drugs.

Choosing the right acid reflux medication is important for the proper treatment of symptoms and prevention of the long term complications this disease can bring. By working with your doctor you can find the right combination of lifestyle changes and medicines that will work for you.

Staying Strong Against Anemia The Natural Way

August 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

What is anemia?

Anemia is a common blood disorder characterized by a deficit of healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells distribute oxygen to every organ in the body, so a decreased number of red cells means the body must work harder to accomplish even simple tasks. As a result, the affected individual experiences constant exhaustion — one of the most common symptoms of anemia.

What causes anemia?

Various factors combine to trigger common anemia: iron deficiency, blood loss, parasites, and insufficient hydrochloric acid in the stomach. .

Another unique form of anemia called \”sickle cell\” results from a genetic disorder which causes a patient\’s body to produce sickle-shaped red blood cells rather than normal spherical ones. The sickle-shaped cells carry less oxygen and cause sufferers to become anemic.

What are the symptoms?

Some of the most common symptoms of anemia are lethargy, exhaustion, and persistent lack of energy. Noticeable side effects of the condition include breathlessness, premature wrinkling, dull eyes, headache, and pale skin.

Severely anemic individuals may also experience frequent heart palpitations, and are at increased risk for mild, moderate, or severe cardiac problems.

Are there cures found in nature?

Yes! Anemia can be effectively treated using natural ingredients to improve the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Most of the remedies utilize common ingredients, too.

Green Vegetables

Most green vegetables such as spinach, fenugreek, lettuce and okra are rich sources of iron. The regular consumption of these vegetables ensures a steady supply of iron in the body. Fenugreek seeds are also a rich source of iron. In addition to the healthful benefits of beet and carrot juice which boost the body\’s hemoglobin production, other natural treatments include:

SESAME SEEDS mixed with milk are a great source of iron. Simply soak a teaspoonful of sesame seeds in lukewarm water, then grind and strain them, sweeten with honey or sugar and mix in a glass of milk.

ALMONDS contain many beneficial elements for anemia sufferers too, including iron, copper and vitamins. To maximize the benefits of almonds, soak seven almonds in water overnight. Remove the skin and grind the almonds into a paste which should be consumed every morning.

CHAMOMILE, ORANGE PEEL, GINGER, AND BRANDY TEA helps cope with the effects of anemia , too. To mix it in your kitchen combine two tablespoons of chamomile, two tablespoons of ground orange peel, and half of a teaspoon of ground ginger in two cups of boiling water. Allow the mixture to cool. Strain and add one cup of brandy. Consume one half of a cup of this blend every morning and evening.

Hypotonia - Symptoms and Causes of Hypotonia

August 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

Hypotonia is a condition of abnormally low muscle tone (the amount of tension or resistance to movement in a muscle), often involving reduced muscle strength. Hypotonia is not a specific medical disorder, but a potential manifestation of many different diseases and disorders that affect motor nerve control by the brain or muscle strength. Recognizing hypotonia, even in early infancy, is usually relatively straightforward, but diagnosing the underlying cause can be difficult and often unsuccessful.

Hypotonia is a medical term used to describe decreased muscle tone (the amount of resistance to movement in a muscle). It is not the same as muscle weakness, although the two conditions can co-exist. Hypotonia may be caused by trauma, environmental factors, or by genetic, muscle, or central nervous system disorders, such as Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi syndrome, myotonic dystrophy, and Tay-Sachs disease. Sometimes it may not be possible to find what causes hypotonia.

An infant with hypotonia exhibits a floppy quality or \”rag doll\” feeling when he or she is held. Infants with this problem lag behind in acquiring certain fine and gross motor developmental milestones that enable a baby to hold his or her head up when placed on the stomach, balance themselves or get into a sitting position and remain seated without falling over.

Symptoms of Hypotonia

The most common symptoms of hypotonia involve problems with mobility and posture, breathing and speech difficulties, lethargy, ligament and joint laxity, and poor reflexes.

Infants who are hypotonic will let their elbows and knees hang loosely instead of flexed as normal. The infant may have poor or no head control.

The extent and occurrence of specific objective manifestations depends upon the age of the patient, the severity of the hypotonia, the specific muscles affected, and sometimes the underlying cause. For instance, some hypotonics may experience constipation, while others have no bowel problems.

Twitching may occur in the tongue and in affected limbs. The patient may experience muscle pain and muscle cramps. Some patients experience more difficulty swallowing saliva and liquids than solid food.

Since hypotonia is most often diagnosed during infancy, it is also known as \”floppy infant syndrome\” or \”infantile hypotonia.\” Infants who suffer from hypotonia are often described as feeling and appearing as though they are \”rag dolls\” or a \”sack of jello,\” easily slipping through one\’s hands.

Causes of Hypotonia

Hypotonia may be caused by trauma, environmental factors, or by genetic, muscle, or central nervous system disorders.

Down syndrome occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21. This form of Down syndrome is called Trisomy 21. The extra chromosome causes problems with the way the body and brain develop.

Hypotonia can be caused by a variety of conditions including those that involve the central nervous system, muscle disorders and genetic disorders. Some common causes can include but are not limited to Down syndrome, Muscular dystrophy, Cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Myotonic dystrophy, Marfan syndrome and Tay-Sachs disease.

A number of different genetic disorders are associated with hypotonia, and may affect the nerves (and by extension the muscles), or the muscles only. Most genetic conditions are generalized (affecting multiple muscle groups) and progressive. Some genetic conditions are hereditary.

Myasthenia gravis: a neuromuscular disorder characterized by variable weakness of voluntary muscles, which often improves with rest and worsens with activity. The condition is caused by an abnormal immune response.

Acid Reflux - Tips for Prevention

August 16, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

Acid reflux is the result of stomach acids moving back into the esophagus through the sphincter valve separating the two. Since the esophagus does not have the protective lining that the stomach has, the introduction of this acid into the esophagus is very painful. Continuous exposure to stomach acids can seriously damage your esophagus. Suffering from acid reflux doesn\’t have to be a permanent state for you. While everyone experiences some heartburn periodically, those that have frequent acid reflux experience this as often as every day. There are steps that you can take to control and prevent acid reflux.

First and foremost, you want to visit your doctor. Acid reflux can be a symptom of a larger problem. Some dietary changes that you can make to help control your acid reflux are: Eating more protein at meals. It is possible that eating protein can help strengthen the muscles of your esophagus, therefore reducing the amount of reflux you experience. Limit carbonated beverages. These drinks can aggravate acid reflux. Avoid food and drinks that contain caffeine and reduce or eliminate alcoholic beverages. These can increase acid production in the stomach, which can lead to acid reflux. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables aids in digestion, although avoid acidic ones such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.

Seventy five percent of all people who suffer from acid reflux find that it occurs most often at night or while lying down. You can help prevent acid reflux by doing the following: Do not go to bed full. Stop eating at least two hours before going to bed. After your last meal of the day, get some exercise rather than lying down on the couch. Sleep with your head raised slightly. You can do this with an extra pillow (making sure it is supporting your upper back as well as your head), or special foam wedges to raise your upper body. Sleep on your left side. The stomach is lower than the esophagus when you lay on your left side, helping reduce the chance for reflux.

If you still experience acid reflux after making lifestyle changes, you can consider medication. There are a number of products on the market, both prescription and non-prescription. The majority of these drugs work by reducing the amount of acid that the stomach produces. Several of these drugs include:

Prilosec. Prilosec is available both ways. If you only suffer from heartburn, you can do short-term management with OTC (over the counter) Prilosec. If you suffer from stomach ulcers, then your doctor can prescribe a stronger version for you.

Protonix. Protonix is available by prescription only and is highly effective. Results show acid reduction of around 90% in patients studied.

Zantac. One of the oldest of the acid reflux drugs, this is available both OTC and by prescription. Zantac is used to prevent acid reflux and to help heal esophagitis caused by acid reflux.

While there isn\’t necessarily a cure for acid reflux, with a combination of lifestyle changes and/or medications, you can be relatively symptom free.

Wryneck Torticollis - Medical Treatments and Alternative Therapies

August 16, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

Wryneck and torticollis are characterized by painful spasms in the neck. A wryneck usually occurs suddenly and is self limited, often vanishing mysteriously. In contrast, torticollis comes on gradually; at first it is intermittent, but it keeps worsening until affected muscles are chronically contracted and the neck posture remains abnormal more or less permanently. Wryneck and torticollis are relatively common, affecting about 1 in 10,000 people, with women slightly outnumbering men. What causes the muscle spasms is often unclear. In some acute cases, entrapment of a nerve arising from the upper spinal cord is responsible. Infection, inflammation, dislocation of a joint in the neck, a thyroid disorder, and a tumor are other possible causes. Heredity is also a possible factor. In congenital torticollis, a baby is born with an injured or malformed neck muscle. Many patients have other involuntary muscle tics and spasms, or spasmodic dystonia, as well. Doctors are frequently unable to identify any single reason for wryneck or torticollis. In the past, cases were often attributed to hysteria and treated as a mental disorder. Physicians now agree that although torticollis can lead to emotional problems, those problems are rarely, if ever, the underlying cause of the affliction.

Diagnostic Studies And Procedures

Newborns should be carefully examined for signs of muscular asymmetry affecting the neck. Adults will be questioned about past nerve and muscle disorders, and recent accidents involving the head and neck. Tests will include a neurological examination, X-rays, CT scans, or MRI, and possibly electromyography, which are studies of the muscles\’ electrical impulses.

Medical Treatments

Most patients benefit from a combination of medical and alternative therapies. Regardless of treatment, 10 to 20 percent recover spontaneously within five years. The outlook, however, is best for patients whose problem stems from an identifiable orthopedic disorder.

Drug Therapy

Prescribed drugs usually include such painkillers as aspirin or stronger nonsteroidal anti inflammatory agents; anticholinergic drugs such as trihexyphenidyl to block certain nerve impulses; and muscle relaxants, such as diazepam (Valium). In some cases, haloperidol or perphenazine (Etrafon or Triavil) are prescribed, but side effects such as lethargy and movement disorders limit their use. Studies indicate that injections of botulinum toxin type A into neck muscles reduce painful spasms and normalize head positions for up to three months in most patients. However, this treatment has not yet been approved by the FDA for neck problems.

Surgery

When other approaches have been unsuccessful, neurosl1rgery to sever some of the nerves that control the neck muscles may help.

Alternative Therapies

A combination of physical therapy and massage sometimes provides temporary relief, and if started in the first year of life, can cure congenital torticollis. The daily regimen includes stretching the shortened neck muscle that holds the head at an abnormal angle. Other alternative therapies include:

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Six sessions with a qualified acupuncturist may provide relief and halt the muscle spasms. Applying pressure to the jaw may give temporary relief.

Biofeedback Training

This technique, which helps a patient control and relax neck muscles, is now a standard treatment.

Chiropractic

Many chiropractors specialize in the treatment of neck pain, including wryneck, using manipulation and electrical stimulation.

Hydrotherapy. Whirlpool baths, alternating hot and cold needle showers, and underwater massage are used by some physical therapists to alleviate muscle spasms and neck pain.

Massage Therapies

Traditional massage, perhaps combined with physical therapy, can be helpful. Others find the more vigorous massage of rolfing or shiatsu beneficial.

Meditation

People who have tension induced wryneck might benefit from meditation and breathing exercises.

Self Treatment

Application of heat can sometimes ease simple wryneck. A battery operated vibrating neck massager that can be worn like a scarf while you read, work at a desk, or do chores may also help. If you work at a computer or use the telephone often, take frequent breaks. Change positions, shrug your shoulders, and gently move your head from side to side. Don\’t cradle the phone between shoulder and neck; instead, try a speakerphone or headphone. Maintain good posture, keep your shoulders down, and avoid sudden head movements. Try to sleep on your back, using a rolled neck pillow. If you suffer chronic neck pain, use a special pillow that provides hot and cold therapy. Sold at medical supply stores, these have a gel pack that can be cooled in the freezer or heated in the microwave and then inserted into a sleeve that fits under the neck. On a long car or plane trip, rest your head on a traveler\’s neck pillow. If a spasm develops, rub it with an ice cube wrapped in a plastic bag using a circular motion. If this doesn\’t help, take a hot shower. A pulsating shower massage on the tensed muscle may relax it.

Other Causes of Neck Spasms

Whiplash and other neck injuries can cause muscle spasms and pain. In some cases, tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder caused by potent antipsychotic drugs, affects the neck.

Acne and Rosacea Linked to MRSA Development

August 16, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Diseases Comments Off

MRSA (multi resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a huge problem in many hospitals leading to numerous deaths and increased hospital stays longer than normal. This has a huge impact on beds let alone peoples safety and confidence in their hospital.

There is growing evidence that the major cause of MRSA is the inappropriate over prescribing of antibiotics by general practitioners. This is not news and it is common knowledge that most infections are viral and do not require antibiotics.

Also it is well known that antibiotics upset gut bacteria and lead to overgrowth of the intestinal tract with fungi such as Candida which is present in everyone\’s guts, but normally kept in check by the probiotic bacteria surrounding it and which also produce chemicals to keep it in check. Antibiotic use can reduce the probiotic bacteria and allow the fungus to grow which over time can lead to inflammation and misdiagnosis of IBS later in life and open another chapter in prescribing. A downward spiral we don\’t want to promote. Candida overgrowth and dysbiotic guts probably affect millions of \’20 something\’s\’ who have just had years of antibiotics for acne, or million of 40 something\’s who have been put on antibiotics for rosacea. We have clever ways of restoring the normal bacterial balance and reducing Candida without harsh antifungals. Click here for more information.

However the use of antibiotics for skin infections such as acne and rosacea often at low doses and often for 3 to 6 months at a time is probably the biggest cause of MRSA (multi resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in hospitals. Let me explain.

It doesn\’t matter whether oral or cream antibiotics are used they cause the same problem. In acne if you have many blocked \’pores\’ (pilo sebaceous ducts) then the anaerobic bacteria propiobacterium acnes (p.acnes) can start to colonise the area under the plug and cause inflammation and damage. This bacterium only survives in normal skin at very low levels as it likes to live in an environment where there is little or no oxygen. When you create a blockage as with acne, you create the environment for p.acnes. So antibiotics can help to reduce p.acnes, but they also hit other friendly skin bacteria and herein lies the problem.

Staphylococcus epidermidis (s.epidermidis) lives on our skin and helps keep other nasty bacteria away. It likes an oxygen rich environment. The same antibiotics that reduce p.acnes often hit the s.epidermidis as well. This attack puts selective pressure on the bacteria to survive and within three or four weeks you can isolate resistant strains s.epidermidis on skin being treated with antibiotics.

Now Staphylococcus epidermidis is related to Staphylococcus aureus (s.aureus) (cousins if you like). S. aureus lives inside the body and s.epidermidis lives on the skin. They meet at places such as the nose and other entrances into the body. They can pass information to each other through the use of things called plasmids and it is highly likely information for developing resistance is transferred.

Hey presto we have started the super bug development. The acne sufferer ends up in hospital for an operation. They get a wound infection either from their own bacteria but also through other bugs already there. S.aureus is a typical bacterium that infects wounds. The antibiotics used for wound infections are often the same or similar to the one that has been used for the patient\’s acne, and it is not surprising they find the antibiotics don\’t work as the bugs are already resistant. This resistant strain becomes the dominant resident s.aureus in the hospital and is extremely difficult to remove and can go on to infect many other patients.

Using a product such as Aknicare which has 4 antibacterial agents which control p.acnes by changing conditions in the area under the plug rather than directly destroying it means you can prevent damage and inflammation without breeding resistant bugs. Aknicare can reduce p.acnes and all the other key causes of an acneic skin (inflammation, oil production, cell turnover) all without breeding resistant bugs.

As a final thought the main treatment for rosacea recommended on PRODIGY, the GP prescribing database recommends ROSEX creams and gels. Rosex contains the antibiotic metronidazole. Rosacea patients often use it for months and years. It works in a few. Metronidazole is also a powerful antioxidant and it is these properties that help with rosacea symptoms, not the antibiotic properties. Rosacea is not caused by bacteria. It is a sobering thought that the antibiotic most used in theatre to prevent infections during and shortly after surgery is metronidazole. Imagine if you had been using it for months or years before that operation.

It is concerning to think the antibiotic you are using today could end up leading to someone dieing in hospital in the near future. Change prescribing habits for acne and rosacea now and have an impact on MRSA in hospitals. Use Aknicare a new medical device with a CE mark. Once in the drug tariff this should be prescribed by GPs. Primary Care Trusts should act now.

For More Information: Acne Treatment visit Aknicare by SkinMed Ltd.
