The Success of British Airways

October 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

British Airways is United Kingdoms largest international airline, with routes to over 550 destinations the world over. This airline is world renowned for their high standards and international recognitions, having been featured in many reviews by airline critics as well as passengers. Apart from just offering flights, British Airways sustains its status within the airline industry through a workforce that offers exceptional work commitment and excellent service levels.

Throughout its long history, British Airways has evolved almost a century within the airline industry. Currently owned by Comair Limited since 1992, this airline started off with humble beginnings as Aircraft Transport and Travel in 1919, with its maiden flight from Le Bourget to Honslow in August 1919. Later, with the merger of a few other airlines due to the decline of the industry, this British airline was named Imperial Airways and was the first major British carrier. At that time, they operated with only 18 aircraft and 250 employees.

Soon after their collaboration with Qantas to launch the first flight to Australia and with the acquiring of more aircraft, British Airways Limited was created which was a merger between Imperial Airways and the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). After World War II, with more transatlantic flights added, another sister airline was also created just to handle these flights. It was known as the British European Airways (BEA). Through the years, British Airways has continued steady growth, incorporating newer and more sophisticated aircraft and as well as running the Concorde since 1979.

The success of British Airways could mostly be attributed to its continuous addition of more long-haul international flights as well as the expansion of their fleet. Apart from that, the entire airline boasts of features that provide their passengers with the best comfort through value added services such as extended leg room for travelers within their economy class cabins, special lounges of British Airways and onboard catering with exclusive wine served.

Additionally, other conveniences provided for ease of check in including telephone check -ins, valet services and also an online portal at http://www.britishairways.com that consists of many features allowing passengers to check flight schedules, check personal bookings, travel advice, information on British Airways destinations and even perform online flight bookings. In fact, they have even implemented an e-ticketing system which provides passengers with the flexibility of checking in without the need of a physical ticket. Only passenger details including proof of identification are required to be produced during check-ins, as all booking information has already been stored in their computer systems. In fact, through this system, flights can be changed even up to 30 minutes before departure time.

Finally, the British Airways portal also provides many other travel services such as hotel bookings, travel insurance purchase, car rentals as well as holiday purchases. This way, these products from British Airways comes in competition with travel sites such as Lastminute.com and Ratestogo.com. However, as all of these are not core businesses of an airline, they merely exist to complement the flight services. Thus, all of these value-added services work together with great customer support services in order to produce success for this famous airline.

How to Start Your Own Aircraft Washing Service

October 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

Starting an aircraft washing and cleaning service is a good idea. You can also detail aircraft and it is fun to hang around the airport all day. If you love flying and aviation it is certainly a very good business to be in. What is excellent about it is that you can sure charge a lot more to detail an aircraft than a car.

Aircraft are very expensive and it takes a little more care to clean them, but the prices are double and triple for washing and waxing. Waxing aircraft cuts down the boundary stationary air on the wing and allows the air to flow more smoothly, which increases performance; speed and slow flying capabilities. So how do you get started you ask? Well it is simple really, not much to it.

If you are simply bartering for airplane rides or working for someone else; such as a flying club or Fixed Based Operator, it should be fairly easy to get going. If on the other hand you wish to start your own business cleaning aircraft then you will need to meet with Airport Manager Staff and get an activities permit to allow you to get onto the airport.

This will require a background check, some processing fees and sometimes even revenue fees as a percentage of sales. You will then need to adhere to airport NPDES permits for environmental controls and insure that your equipment meets those standards. There are a few hoops to jump thru in the beginning but it is well worth it you see? Consider this in 2006.

Inflatable Aircraft Wing Camber Modification

October 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

Every aircraft is a compromise. It is either built to fly fast or slow to land in tight distances and carry more weight. It is a jet or propeller driven craft. It costs a lot with high tech materials or it is simplistic and has less performance. Aircraft are built for many reasons, each one maybe more or less important for its intended purpose. Some aircraft are made to slightly change in flight to serve a niche or a couple of niches better than comparable type aircraft. As we learn more about our options of materials in aerospace we learn of was to incorporate multiple uses and still maintain safety at low airspeeds and efficiency at high speeds.

I propose an inflatable wing camber modification system for modern day fighter aircraft to save on fuel and increase range. By increasing the lift on take off where much fuel is used we can increase the range of fighter aircraft in the battlespace while simultaneously increasing the payloads of smart munitions to kill, annihilate and destroy the enemy to serve our political will. Smile in preemption, it is about winning. The system would be recessed into two-inch deep areas on the wings. Consider the landing speeds of an F-104, consider the ability to decrease the weight of the landing gear and size of tires to increase payloads. Consider the ware and tear and maintenance costs, which would be saved? Consider the slow speed changes in flight characteristic and decreased safety risks in shorter take off and landing rolls. The performance changes would also vastly assist in close air support or carrier landing handling.

For UAVs the performance would allow additional time loitering in the battlespace with increased range and slow flight speeds would allow for better imagery to identify targets before eliminating them from this time period. Think on these concepts.

How Much Has Travelling In The United States Changed?

October 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

A United States Vacation has been forever changed by the events of 9/11. The airline industry, which was affected the most, led the way in bringing about the changes. Other segments of the travel industry just fell right in line.

International travel was heavily impacted by 9/11. So was domestic travel. However, domestic travel has rebounded favorably. The figures for domestic travel this year are extremely strong.

Many families are opting for a United States Vacation, which is great news. However, you must still be prepared to wait in long lines even for domestic travel. The many restrictions are put in place to protect the traveler. So get to the airport early.

Security at the airports is so much tighter. Expect delays. There is so much to cope with. Security screeners are well trained, and have no fear of stopping the line in order to inspect more closely.

There are more random searches done. If you are pulled aside for a random search just submit. You will get out quicker. After all, the security personnel are only doing their job.

If you see a straight-faced person on your plane it may be the federal air marshall. They are on numerous flights.

There has been a major shift toward the vacation traveler planning their own travel. Almost 70% are using the internet for their all important getaway.

You must always be flexible with flight plans. That flexibility will save you a lot of dollars when planning your trip.

Americans love to travel. They have used travel to show the world that in spite of terrorist activity, theyll continue to do the things that they love to do.

A United States Vacation is still one of the best bargains around. 70% of Americans plan their own vacation. Many are using this book to save travel dollars. It has so many tips and shortcuts that you can use. Grab your link here! Grab your link here!

Buying and Selling Bell Helicopters

October 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

Anyone who is even remotely associated with the aircraft industry is likely to have heard about the Bell helicopters. This is one name which has thoroughly enjoyed its share of popularity for a time longer than any other of its like. Bell Helicopter Textron, as the full name goes, is one of the biggest helicopter and tilt-rotor manufacturers in the world. This Bell division of Textron, Inc. produces copters both for civil and defense purposes. And since 1946-47, Bell has produced over 30,000 helicopters.

It all started when Arthur Young, a gifted helicopter inventor, caught Larry Bells attention. Now Larry Bell was a reputed entrepreneur, who founded the Bell Aircraft Corporation. When Bell saw Youngs talents, he soon teamed up with him in 1941 and thereafter Bell never looked back. What was already gaining popularity as an estimable aircraft manufacturer started getting attention as a good helicopter maker as well. By 1951, Bell was flying high on the wings of success, creating history worldwide. Once Bell Aircraft Corporation earned a fair name as a trusted helicopter builder, it set up its helicopter division headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.

So a name as reliable as its products surely has a high value when it comes to buying and selling helicopters. For one thing, the helicopter business has its own challenges. A lot of market research and evaluation go into fixing the best deal. If you are to buy or sell a helicopter, you may find yourself groping where to start. To make the task easy, there are many marketing agents who are ready to serve all your helicopter needs. Some of them particularly specialize in the purchase and sale of Bell helicopters. They do all the necessary market study, assess the selling condition of your helicopter, suggest a price for it and then distribute the information across the globe with their networking. Getting the right buyer is only a matter of some time then!

In case you wish to buy a helicopter or switch to a new Bell model, these agencies would provide you with the relevant details and specifications. If there is a Bell helicopter for sale somewhere in the world, chances are that the entire product information regarding that would rest with the agent. You would know if it has any damage history, how many hours it has flown, availability time et al. Not just that, they also showcase pictures of those from all angles to make your decision-making easier. You just need to choose the one you think best fits your requirement and the jobs done.

Bell keeps coming up with newer models. And people often sell older models to check out the latest. Therefore, the number of used helicopters under the Bell name is also higher. That may be one reason why the purchase and sell of Bell helicopters, in particular, never ceases.

Expanding Your Auto Detailing Business - The Pros and Cons to Aircraft Cleaning

October 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

As the founder of an aircraft cleaning business, and after franchising it all over the country, I often get asked about the industry. Detailing and Cleaning corporate aircraft is a great business and the pay is very good. Recently, a successful operator of a car detailing company asked me about the aircraft-detailing sector as a potential place to expand his business.

\r Subject: Expanding into Aircraft - Looking at expanding our current detail business into the aircraft industry. Where is the best place to investigate the pro and cons of this segment of the detailing business?

\r Well, perhaps the biggest cons to adding Aircraft Detailing to your mix is Time, Aggravation, and Cost.

Time:

It takes time to develop Aircraft Corporate Detailing Accounts, but once you have a few the word of mouth is good and brings you in lots of business.

Aggravation:

It is aggravating to have to deal with the many airport rules, background checks for all employees and the time it takes the bureaucracy to process your \”Airport Activity Permit\”, but once completed it acts as a barrier to entry keeping out competition and gives you an exclusive on the captured customer base. Generally, there are only 2-3 aircraft cleaning companies on an airport.

Cost:

Cost is a huge consideration, as the airport will require increased liability insurance, and that could run you several thousand dollars, depending on the situation. Generally the airport wants to be additionally insured for 5 million or more in liability insurance. Insurance companies need you to pay some of that upfront, yet realize you have not cleaned your first aircraft yet. Worse, the permit at the airport can take as long as 3-months to process, usually faster, but it gets ridiculous sometimes.

Those are the biggest negatives. The pros are that you make a lot more money cleaning aircraft than anything else you will wash in the transportation industry, so it is a good business and the work is a lot easier too. Perhaps you should consider this if you wish to expand your auto-detailing company?

Helicopter Aerodynamics - Retreating Blade Stall

October 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

There are a number of dangerous situations for helicopters and other aircraft that use rotors. One such situation is known as retreating blade stall. This is where the rotor blades traveling away from the direction of flight enter a stalled condition.

This is caused by a combination of fairly low airspeed, and/or the angle of attack being too large. Retreating blade stall is what limits the speed at which helicopters are able to fly, even the fastest helicopters can only fly at around 200 knots.

Rotor blades travel in a circular movement, and so some of them will be traveling in the direction of travel (advancing) and some will be moving away (retreating blade).

The majority of helicopter designers have overcome this problem somewhat by allowing a certain amount of flex in the blades.

The blades flex during the advance of the blades. This means that the angle of attack is much lower. The blades flex down when the blades retreat which increases the lift and angle of attack.

The cyclic pitch control can also be used to increase the pitch of the retreating blades and also decrease the pitch of the advancing blades. This make is possible to generate more lift and balance out the effects of advancing and retreating blades.

Failure
\r The compensations built into the modern helicopter designs they can only reduce the effects, not completely eradicate it. Its possible for helicopters to move too fast, which means that the retreating blades do not provide enough lift. This results in retreating blade stall.

Performance
\r As a helicopter reaches the airspeed where retreating blade stall will occur, the helicopter will begin to shake and the noise will get louder. If the nose is pulled upwards the condition can be corrected as the helicopter will begin to slow down. If this condition is not corrected in time the helicopter is likely to roll over.

Causes
\r Retreating blade stall can occur much easier when one or more of the following conditions are met. The more conditions that are present the more likely that retreating blade stall will become a problem.

Things that can make retreating blade stall more of an issue include turbulent air, low speed RPM of the rotors, abrupt turning, or high airspeed.

Few of these factors are due to pilot error. It is particularly important that all helicopter pilots know how to correct this should it ever arise.

October 10, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

Thinking of flying by air for the first time? Set aside your fears it is as easy as ridding a bus. Air travel is safe and quick. All you need to do is follow the rules and your flight will be trouble free. Before you book tickets log on to the World Wide World and read articles on air travel, there is information of booking tickets, airport parking, security measures, how to prepare for a flight, about jet lag and long haul flights, as well as many tickets on managing packing, airport chaos, and air sickness.

Travelers today have many options as far as air travel ticket bookings are concerned. You can book on a low cost air carrier or a regular flight. The only difference is that low cost airlines offer no frills like food and beverages.

1. Tickets can be booked at airline offices, websites, through travel agents or through online websites devoted to selling flight tickets.

2. Before you book a ticket you need to determine when you want to travel and whether your travel plans have a chance of changing.

3. Booking discounted tickets could mean that you cannot change your travel plans or will have to pay more for changing your booking.

4. Always buy your tickets after comparison shopping find out how much your ticket is going to cost if you book through the airline, through a travel agent, or online. Then take one more step to check difference in fares between different players in the same category. For instance if you are considering online booking as an option , find out how much the ticket will cost from different sites like Orbitz, cheapairtickets.com, Expedia and so on.

5. Be sure to avail of any loyalty points or rewards offered on credit card bookings.

6. Once you have booked a ticket you must print out a copy or take down the code given by the airline as confirmation of your booking.

7. Well before you leave for the airport ring the airline on their toll free number and confirm that the flight is on time. Leave for the airport fairly early allowing time for traffic snarls, airport parking problems, security checks and more.

As a first time flier you will need to take a few precautions. Never eat an oily or heavy meal before a flight. Always take along with you essential medicines and a light snack. Carry a small bottle of water. Follow rules set by authorities and drink the water and throw away the water bottle before proceeding for a security checks. Most airport and airline websites have tips for travelers as well as a list of banned items.

If you prepare well and knowledgeably air travel should not pose a problem.

Dublin Airport: The Present

October 10, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

Situated just north of Dublin City, Dublin Airport (Aerfort Bhaile Atha Cliath in Irish) has seen massive growth in passenger number over recent years. Spurred on by the Celtic Tiger economic boom which allowed Irish people to holiday more in foreign countries, the numbers flying through Dublin Airport have increased massively.

Ten years ago passenger levels were around 7 million. 17 million people travelled through Dublin Airport in 2004 and while in 2005 18.4 million people travelled through the airport which was the 14th consecutive year of passenger number growth at Dublin Airport. Amazingly passenger numbers travelling through Dublin Airport have grown at a rate of 1million passengers per year.

In an ideal world, Dublin Airport would have continuously adapted and expanded to keep up with these amazing numbers. Unfortunately now, Dublin Airport is an airport that is ill equipped to deal with these numbers. Today, conditions at Dublin Airport are less than ideal when compared with airports around the world which are adapted and planned to deal with expanded passenger numbers. Rather than an intelligent forward looking planning process for the expansion of Dublin Airport, it seems to be reactionary.

Passenger opinions for Dublin Airport are almost unanimous in their criticism for the airport. Where as other airport around the world are spacious and clean with modern equipment, Dublin airport seems to be very outdated. Part of the problem for Dublin Airport is that it has confined itself in on a postage stamp size of land which has meant expansion difficult if not near impossible. While Dublin Airports future may be rosier, there is no doubt that in its current state it is unsuitable for the purpose it is serving.

8 Tips On Parking At The Airport On A Budget

October 09, 2008 By: admin Category: Aviation Comments Off

Air travel has become affordable and is within the reach of most people. However traveling by air means you need to think about how expensive airport parking charges can be. And what is more these costs are not covered as reimbursement by companies, so you need to spend just to feel your car is save and secure at an airport parking lot.

There are many ways in which you can park at an airport on a budget. Here are a few useable ideas.

1. Use discounts offered by online airport parking web sites. Many companies that handle airport parking offer lower rates for online or e-coupon bookings.

2. Ask if the airport parking lots have different rates for long-term/short-term parking. Many airport parking lots charge more for lots closer to departure gates than for parking lots a considerable distance away.

3. Determine whether your membership with the AAA or other organizations offers you any advantages as far as airport parking lots are concerned.

4. Consider parking at an off-site airport lot. You will save a lot of money and be able to use a shuttle service run by the parking lot to the airport. In fact you may save energy by not having to lug heavy bags across parking lots.

5. Do a comparison of different on and off-site airport parking sites and their costs as well as pros and cons such as distance, transportation, safety, time saving and so on.

6. Locate your airport web site and check out short-term and long-term rates for parking and covered parking and open parking options. Links to the airport websites are at websites like www.AirlineQuality.com.

7. Collect parking coupons from operations near the airport. Visit websites like www.AirportDiscountParking.com and find valuable parking offers. Look for discount rates offered say mid-week and offers of one extra days free parking if you book x number days. Some sites even have what is termed as a free day of parking.

8. If you are traveling continuously consider staying at a hotel near the airport overnight and using their parking facilities. Any hotels allow guests to park their cars for a limited period free of cost.

If you become an innovative traveler you can save on airport parking a more. Try and:

Keep a tab on online offers. As business competition becomes tougher many airport parking websites run offers which you can use and save dollars.

Plan to travel on week days when parking is cheaper than weekends when parking becomes a premium.

When you book your ticket ask the travel agent or airline whether the offer pick and drop services.

Consider taking a taxi to the airport it may be cheaper than parking. This would of course depend on where you stay or work.

Find out if you can buy parking coupons at a bulk rate. This will be a saving if you are a frequent flier.

Ask if e-coupon booking or paying with accredit card warrants you a lower rate.

Surf the World Wide Web for travel related articles and tips. There are many ways to save precious dollars that can be used elsewhere like a nice dinner, new clothes, or much sought after gizmo!
